OKINAWA: THE LAST BATTLE OF WORLD WAR II. by Robert Leckie, author of more than 30 books on military history. Considered one of the finest works on this 83-day battle, Leckie retells this epic story from both sides. He especially focuses on the American soldiers, Marines, and their commanding officers, drawing brilliantly illuminated portraits of individuals who fought a merciless enemy. In the end, American casualties totaled almost 50,000 KIA/WIA/MIA. But the Japanese were left with 100,000 KIA, its navy crushed, and 7,800 planes lost. 240 pages. Photographs. REVIEW: "Leckie's smooth narrative deals with all aspects of the Okinawa battle...and his style adds some nice touches, including autobiographical flashes that go back as fas as Guadalcanal." Washington Post Book World.
