Click to EnlargeAMERICA'S FIRST WOMEN SHERIFF CAPTURES KENTUCKY'S BAREFOOT DESPERADO, LAWRENCE GRIFFITH. In the author's quest for information on the details of Lawrence Griffith's story, it was found that his story involved the first woman sheriff in Kentucky and in the United States. This fascinating story is one of murder in 1919, wrongful conviction, of prison escapes, gun battles and capture. A murder, an escape, the capture, a trial, an election and the wrongful prosecution leading to prison incarceration are all part of this twisted, but true story written by Diane Griffith. Events surrounding the infamous Eddyville, KY prison siege in October 1923 have recently unveiled a historical fact. Diane’s research involving her husband’s grandfather, Lawrence Griffith, found he was prosecuted for the death of a Mayfield, KY man circa 1922. Awaiting his trial in the Mayfield jail, he managed to escape becoming Kentucky’s Barefoot Desperado running throughout Western Kentucky and Western Tennessee evading Graves County, KY Sheriff, John Roach. Sheriff Roach was later killed by one of his deputy’s during a dispute. After his death the remaining deputies stepped down from their positions leaving no one to take on the responsibility of Sheriff. The citizens of Mayfield strongly encouraged Lois Roach, John’s wife, to fulfill the position. Judge J.W. Monroe would later uphold the citizen’s opinion and appoint her as Sheriff. The countless hours of research would later unveil that Lois Roach was America’s first woman sheriff. Filled with trial transcripts and newspaper articles as proven evidence of research, this book of fate finally discloses the Griffith’s family story for more than 75 years. This publication is two stories compiled into one and written in the context of the early 1900’s preserving the true feeling of the events surrounding the capture of Kentucky’s Barefoot Desperado by America’s First Woman Sheriff.
