OKINAWA 1945. By Chronicles the land, sea and air battles at Okinawa, the last campaign of WWII in the Pacific, a bloody affair that convinced the US that an invasion of Japan would prove so costly that deployment of atomic weapons was a sensible alternative. U.S. casualties exceeded 70,000.
The Imperial Japanese 32nd Army held out against overwhelming U.S. naval, air and ground firepower for ten weeks by moving its whole force underground. Includes the Japanese Order of Battle, and presents a rare look at the battle from surviving Japanese troops.
US ground forces covered in this book include: US Marines, US Army's 7th Infantry Division, 27th Infantry Division, 77th Infantry Division, 96th Infantry Division, Tenth Army.
