INCREDIBLE VICTORY: THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY. The Americans had no chance to win, but they did. A minute-by-minute chronicle of the Battle of Midway, from the author of A Night to Remember and A Day of Infamy.
MIDWAY: THE INCREDIBLE VICTORY. By any standards, the American fleet at Midway was hopelessly outclassed, facing a Japanese navy that was brilliant, experienced and invincible.
This is Walter Lord's much acclaimed 1967 history of the Battle of Midway. He paints the picture of Midway in unforgettable terms: the odds for victory by the U.S. were nil. The Japanese ships far outweighed the American vessels. Midway's shore defenses included guns in service since the previous century. None of the American Navy pilots on the carriers had ever been in combat. Some of the American Marine pilots had less than 4 hours of flight experience since flight school. The Japanese, by comparison, were flying the finest fighter planes in the world at that time.
The Americans had no chance to win, but they did. In winning this battle, which occurred a scance 6 months after Pearl Harbor, the entire course of the war against Japan changed. This book tells the story as few books have. It is well researched with personal interviews with many of the men who fought the battle. This is a classic history book.
