In this new (2001) book, the author (a professor of international and military history at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey) explains why the end of the Second World War did not bring us peace. Since 1945 the world has been gripped by smaller and more localized conflicts which, nevertheless, have on some occasions brought the great powers a step closer to general war. Yet whatever their international impact, they have all in some way been wars of national liberation.
The author provides compelling reasons for and why wars have been fought for over fifty years. He leads us through the peasant uprising in China, the guerilla warfare of Vietnam, the terror tactics of Palestine, Algeria, and Latin America. He examines the roles played by outsiders in Korea and the tribal and factional loyalties of the violence in sub-Saharan Africa. Finally he looks at conflicts that continue to rage on the peripheries of the former Soviet Union. This is a fascinating book, with striking photography and graphics. This is also an important book which explains the quest for national liberation. 224 large pages.
