Any history book by Stephen Ambrose is worth reading, and this 1992 classic is no exception. As in his later books about World War II, the author paints his picture mostly from the viewpoint of the enlisted men and junior officers. Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. This book tells its story of the "band of brothers" from basic training in George to D-Day and beyond. When tough assignments were being given out, this Company always seemed to be firsty in line. The unit parachuted into France before dawn on D-Day. In Holland, a 35-man platoon of Easy Company routed two German companies of about 300 men. In a much later assignment, just prior to the German surrender, Easy Company was sent to seize Berchtesgaden, Hitler's mountain-top fortified home better known as Hitler's Eagles Nest. By the time you finish this book, you will feel as if you know personally most of the members of Easy Company. This is a great book for all students of World War II history. 335 pages. Photos. Maps. SEMPER FI is the story of the combat operations of the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Campaign of World War II and in the Korean War. During the Second World War it was predominantly Marine Corp units that led the amphibious assaults that spearheaded Admiral Nimitzs island hopping strategy in the Central Pacific. From the Solomon Islands to Okinawa, from Tarawa to Peleliu, it was the United States Marines that hit the beaches first. It was the United States Marines that suffered the first casualties. In the process, they became the masters of the art of amphibious warfare, perfecting a role they had been designed to perform and raising it to a level that no one has yet equaled. This is the story of uncommon valor. This is the story of the few, the proud, the brave, the Marines. TOTAL TIME 6 HOURS. Video 4-pack More... |

HILLS OF SACRIFICE: The 5th RCT in Korea. By Michael Slater. Not for the faint-hearted, this is a graphic and moving account of a premier Army unit during the Korean War with the battle action seen through the eyes of the men who endured those horrors. The 5th Regimental Combat Team (RCT) was unique in many respects. It was one of the first elements to return to Korea in 1950. Moreover, the Hawaiian regiment was proud of its unusually diverse cultural and ethnic blend. As a separate RCT, the 5th was assigned at various times to the 1st Cavalry, the 3rd, 24th, 25th, 40th and 45th Infantry Divisions, as well as the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. The 5th RCT stands in the annals of military history among America's most storied regiments such as the 442d "Go For Broke", the 27th Wolfhounds, and the 5th Marines. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, many of them by the acclaimed combat photographer AL Chang. Also includes a comprehensive list of unit casualties and index. Extra large "coffee table size" volume. More... |
